The country where death is now just a lifestyle choice: A mum with ringing ears. Babies whose parents don't want them to suffer. They've all been allowed to die by assisted suicide in Holland

Andre Verhoeven (pictured centre with his wife Dora) married in his local Catholic church, lived in an unpretentious town south of Amsterdam, and worked as a respected teacher at the nearby secondary school. He had planned to retire at 65 to travel the world with his wife, Dora. Instead, he was diagnosed with acute leukaemia, a cancer of the blood, for which he was told there was no cure. Because of complications from the cruel illness, he became paralysed from the neck down. At the age of 64, Andre (pictured top left with his grandson shortly before his death, and bottom left, his family) had to go into a care home and two months later, he decided he could take no more. Everyone in the Netherlands, where a right-to-die law was passed in 2002, seems to know of someone who has lost a loved one through a mercy killing. Gaby Olthuis (right) suffered '24-hour noise' in her head, 'like a train screeching or someone scratching their nails on a chalk board'. To end her suffering, she was given a lethal potion to drink by one of the clinic's doctors at her home and left behind two teenage children.

Did AirAsia pilot successfully ditch plane on sea's surface only for it to sink in storm? Experts claim Flight 8501's emergency locator failed to go off because there was no major impact

The captain of AirAsia flight 8501 (top left) may have performed a successful emergency water landing only for the aircraft to then be overcome by high seas, aviation experts have said. 'The emergency locator transmitter (ELT) would work on impact, be that land, sea or the sides of a mountain, and my analysis is it didn't work because there was no major impact during landing,' said Dudi Sudibyo, a senior editor of aviation magazine Angkasa, adding the pilot could have managed to land it on the sea's surface. The black box from the Airbus that was carrying 162 people from Indonesia to Singapore when it came down over the Java Sea on Sunday has yet to be located. Meanwhile, two analysts examining flight data leaked from the Indonesian investigation into Flight 8501 say the plane behaved in ways 'bordering on the edge of logic' before it plummeted from the skies.

Great Scott, it's 2015! So just how many predictions did Back To The Future II get right?

back
2015 has arrived and for movie buffs everywhere, there is but one pressing question - how many predictions did Back To The Future II get right about this year? In the 1989 sci-fi comedy, Marty McFly (played by Michael J Fox) and sidekick 'Doc' Brown (Christopher Lloyd) travel through time to the futuristic year of 2015. While we might not all be jetting about on hoverboards like Marty (left), or zooming through the skies in a flying car (right centre), both futuristic contraptions are far closer to becoming a reality in 2015 than they were in the 1980s. Meanwhile, there are eerily accurate technological predictions in the film - which include wearable technology that looks remarkably similar to Google Glass (top right) and video-call communication that works like Skype or Facetime (bottom right).

Sarah Palin sparks outrage by posting photo of her son standing on the family dog in bizarre New Year's message

The time to advise former Alaska governor and future cartoon villain archetype Sarah Palin to proofread her social media posts has long passed.

Palin posted an alarming New Year?s greeting to her Facebook fans: her 6-year-old son, Trig, standing on the family dog.

This is, in Palin?s mind, a sign of perseverance. Trig wanted to help wash dishes in the kitchen sink, Palin wrote, and the dog sat in front of it. So the dog, as an object and not a living being, became a stepping stone instead of a hindrance.
The former Alaska governor described the three images of her six-year-old son Trig using the black Labrador for a stepping stool as 'a symbol of perseverance'.

Married police constable arrested on suspicion of misconduct 'after sleeping with three prostitutes while on duty'

Prostitution 'crackdown' unveiled
Around 80,000 women in Britain work as prostitutes
Tougher rules for men who buy sex, with more support for prostitutes, are among plans being published in a government strategy on prostitution.
In the plans for England and Wales, more kerb-crawlers could lose their driving licences, while prostitutes would get help over drugs and housing.
Ministers have ditched earlier plans for licensed red-light zones, believing they could send out the wrong message.
But prostitute groups said crackdowns could put sex workers in more danger.
Former home secretary David Blunkett announced plans in 2004 to decriminalise some brothels in what would have been the biggest shake-up of prostitution laws for 50 years.
But the Home Office has indicated it rejects this proposal, saying prostitution blighted communities.
'Wrong message'
Instead, the new strategy includes measures to help stop children and teenagers being lured into the trade.
